About the course

Emerging technologies and changing lifestyles are creating new insurance challenges for personal lines brokers. This course examines three rapidly growing areas of exposure—drone ownership, lithium-ion battery risks, and pet insurance—providing practical guidance for identifying coverage issues before they become claim disputes. Participants will explore the insurance implications of recreational and commercial drone operations, including Transport Canada requirements, aviation liability, privacy concerns, contractual obligations, and the limitations of standard homeowners and commercial liability policies. The course also examines the growing property and liability exposures associated with lithium-ion batteries found in e-bikes, scooters, power tools, electric vehicles, and household electronics, emphasizing charging practices, storage controls, thermal runaway, business interruption, and risk management. Finally, participants will gain a practical understanding of pet insurance, including accident and illness coverage, pre-existing condition exclusions, waiting periods, deductibles, reimbursement models, policy limits, and the documentation required for successful claims. Designed for Canadian P&C brokers, this course equips participants to recognize emerging risks, ask more effective underwriting questions, explain evolving coverage issues with confidence, and recommend appropriate insurance solutions for today's changing personal insurance marketplace.
