About the Course

Liability claims can arise from everyday activities, but understanding when legal responsibility exists—and how insurance responds—is essential for every personal lines broker. This course provides a practical foundation in liability law before examining how homeowners liability coverage and umbrella insurance work together to protect clients against significant financial loss. Participants will explore the legal principles of negligence, including duty of care, breach, causation, foreseeability, occupiers' liability, and vicarious liability. The course then examines Section II of the homeowners policy, distinguishing legal liability from voluntary payment coverages while reviewing defence costs, residence employee benefits, premises definitions, and important limitations involving watercraft and motorized vehicles. Finally, participants will learn how umbrella liability policies provide higher limits, respond when underlying coverage is exhausted, and, in some cases, offer drop-down protection for otherwise uninsured claims, subject to retained limits and policy wording. Designed for Canadian P&C brokers, this course strengthens the ability to recognize liability exposures, explain policy provisions clearly, identify coverage gaps, and recommend appropriate liability limits and umbrella protection to help clients safeguard their personal assets.
